2 miles along the beach in West Seattle - then booked a sports massage session. Whatever is going on with my left calf is not going away on its own, it seems. Otherwise felt good - quads are feeling yesterday’s tubing (well, not so much the tubing, more the walking back up the snow slope afterwards!)
One mile - cold morning, calf muscles decided to protest so the planned two miles was cut in half to avoid serious injury. On the walk back, the muscles warmed up a bit more and stopped protesting so much: moral of the story, walk longer before starting running!
Three miles in the rain of Victora, British Columbia, this morning - soaking wet, thoroughly enjoyed it; ran-walked all the way round, using the Garmin to keep track of distance as I ran around the Inner Harbour (well, along some of the paths). Ankle/knee/nerve all held up fine (minor niggle in left calf to keep an eye on). Sciatic nerve kicked in later in the day, but on the usual schedule.
… when I can. The inevitable fates are conspiring (deadlines, dark mornings, late nights, a still unruly sciatic nerve). But running is being achieved from time to time, and it’s getting better each time.
Heh. That “days run since” idea has been parked; the back/hip/leg combo has not been co-operating. I’ll resume it when more reliable service is being provided by my left lower quadrant.
That said, running on a treadmill was achieved this evening and it was not only not painful, it was considerably more effective than I had anticipated. Back started to twinge after about 15 mins (1m run/90s walk repeats) so I moved to the elliptical then the rower, and then stretched thoroughly.
Right now, it all feels ok despite the need to sit and wade through more exam scripts than I really want to have to contemplate. One day at a time.
Couple of running sessions this week, but short - the back pain turned into a pinched sciatic nerve, so I need to be careful not to aggravate it too much: result, 10 minutes runs. I thought I’d take this opportunity to get into a proper habit, running every day, as it’s only for a short time each day - as things get better, then just extend the time.
Good news? Well, I have no trouble keeping up at faster than my desired marathon pace. The goal for London is to do it in under 6 hours - ie: get me round, get used to the endurance. I’ll build on speed for the next one.
Not as late as it might have been, given that the clocks went back.
Out for a run, which became a bit freestyle once the watch battery went flat: 2 min run/1 min walk for the first half (until the watch died), then ran all the way back from bridge to bridge - road bridge to rail bridge. It’s not all that far (maybe half a mile?) but I ran it all, no walking breaks. It was a bit of a slog, but manageable.
I remember when I first - first, first, that is - started running, that seemed like an impossible goal. I’m a lot fitter than I used to be; I need to remember that.
Sports massage might be a plan soon, though, as various parts of my lower legs were a bit tight. Stretched at the end of the run, and it all feels fine now.
Short run - just running back from my sister’s, after dropping the car off for her to use. It got me out, and I managed a run that knocks a minute per km off my usual running time, just because it was going to be short. Short & regular will be a good way to deal with things, to get into the routine properly etc.
Must remember to eat better - the general crap (white carbs etc) that I’ve been eating is doing me no favours in any way. Medication is the other ‘must remember’ - I’ve been forgetting it, and that won’t help at all.
Decidedly sub-optimal. The good news is that I did go out, and I did try. It’s been a bit of a gap - work and inertia, probably a minor cold somewhere in there. Definitely exhaustion - I haven’t been sleeping enough, and haven’t been sleeping well; I woke up this morning after 5 hours sleep with my mind racing through this and that and the other and circling back again.
But this evening I did go out; felt fine walking the warm-up. Then started running. That was not so fine: feet hitting the ground hard (usually I run much more lightly), and it felt almost like someone else’s legs, heavy and unco-operative. Sort of. Twinge started in the left calf, then the left knee, then the right knee. Finally, I called a halt when my eyes started to feel odd. Could see alright, but it felt a bit like a sinus headache starting.
So I walked home. M tells me I’ve been ’snuffling’ in my sleep, sounding as though I have a cold; I’ve certainly got something, but think I’ve been assuming it was just lack of sleep.
Still, I went out; and I had been planning to repeat the 2 min run/1 min walk week again anyway, having missed one session this week.
The holiday coming up in 10 days couldn’t be coming at a better time.
